BMW, in all their infinite wisdom, have secured the exhaust cam sensor with an Allen bolt in a space that’s too small to get an allen wrench in. My options for access are to try to fashion a tool, or to drain and remove the coolant tank. Either way the screw is rusty and I’m not going to be able to seat a tool on it without hammering it in. This requires even more room.
I should note that my inspection sticker expires this week and the code the sensor is throwing will prevent me from passing inspection.
The intake cam sensor I did last year was no better. Getting the sensor off required removing the VANOS solenoid (which leaked oil everywhere btw) and then the electrical connector was buried at the back of the block and I had to disassemble the air intake to get my hand in there.

Sounds like you know what you have to do.

Make sure it’s an Allen and not a torx.

not over-engineering. I’ve yet to see that ever in my 15 years wrenching. Though, it looks like you’d have to take so much off for one bolt. Lame, but common

Over-compaction then?

Over engineered stuff usually doesn’t ever require any wrenching. So you never see it.

Silly English-speaking person. It is not engineered poorly. It is just engineered to a level that only our certified BMW technicians are able to comprehend. Just bring it* to your nearest certified BMW service center!

The other cam sensor was 5mm Allen so this would be the same.

Over-packaging, then.

Allen bolts suck in just about every circumstance. I will never out one back in if there’s another option. It’s just the manufacturer being cheap.

It’s a BMW. I stand by my statement.

The bolt is recessed. All he has to do is remove the vent hose at the top and then move the resevior over, no need to drain the coolant. It’s a super easy job, especially compared to some of the crap he would have to do on that car to turn the check engine light (try replacing the timing chain and rebuilding the VANOS).

I hear Audis are super easy to work on once you’ve removed the entire front of the car...

At least it’s not a triple square head you realize you don’t have until the last minute
